Outstanding track and field athletes from around the world put in impressive performances at the ISTAF Indoor 2024 in Berlin. Malaika Mihambo impressed in the long jump with a season’s best of 6.95 metres, while Ernest John Obiena from the Philippines set a new Asian record in the pole vault with 5.93 metres. The event offered exciting competitions in eight disciplines.
Mihambo, the 2021 Olympic champion, dominated in the long jump and ended her indoor season on a high. Emmanuel Eseme from Cameroon and Italy’s Zaynab Dosso set the fastest times in the men’s and women’s 60m sprints respectively. Greta Kerekes from Hungary won the women’s 60m hurdles, while Daniel Roberts from the USA won the men’s race.
A newly introduced competition for para-sprinters saw Maxcel Amo Manu from Italy as the winner. In addition, the discus throw competition “everyone against everyone” provided excitement, with the men’s team triumphing. The event underlined the popularity of athletics in Germany, although the sport faces challenges as a spectator sport.
