In the quarter-finals of the Lower Rhine Cup, fifth division side KFC Uerdingen and third division side Rot-Weiss Essen (RWE) played out a thrilling duel in front of 8,205 spectators at the Grotenburg Stadium. Uerdingen took an early lead with a goal from Touratzidis after a dream pass from Talarski in the 14th minute. The hosts defended skilfully and remained dangerous on the counter-attack and had further good chances to extend their lead through Yanagisawa and Lipinski. RWE, with captain Vinko Sapina back in the starting eleven, found it difficult to get into the game and were initially unable to overcome the compact Uerdingen defence.
After the break, RWE turned up the heat, made a double substitution and changed tactics. Brumme equalised in the 56th minute with a shot from distance. Uerdingen had the chance to take the lead again through Weber, but RWE keeper Wienand made a brilliant save. In the closing stages, substitutes Harenbrock and Doumbouya proved their quality: Harenbrock headed in a cross from Voelcke to make it 2:1, and Doumbouya made the final score 3:1 in the 90th minute.
The game remained entertaining and open until the end, with chances on both sides. Despite the defeat, Uerdingen were celebrated by their fans for their strong performance, while RWE turned the game around with tactical adjustments and effective jokers. Uerdingen’s player coach Kenia was shown a yellow card in the final minutes, which meant that RWE ended the game with a superior number of players.
