Discover historical images of Berlin’s Alexanderplatz from the years 1950 to 1970. These photos show Alexanderplatz through the ages, with significant buildings such as the Alexanderhaus and the Berolinahaus, which are the only pre-war buildings to have survived. In the 1960s, distinctive buildings such as the Haus des Lehrers with the adjacent congress hall and the Haus des Reisens were built.
Equally striking were the Interhotel Stadt Berlin (now the Park Inn hotel) and the Centrum department store (now Galeria Kaufhof). The images also document the construction of the TV tower, which was inaugurated in 1969 and has dominated the cityscape ever since. The Urania World Clock and the Fountain of Friendship between Peoples, both built in 1969, can also be seen in the pictures. These photos offer a fascinating insight into the architectural development of Alexanderplatz during this era in the GDR.
