Tour de Femmes Overview

The history of a female counterpart to the Tour de France dates back to 1955, when a one-off race was held. From 1984 to 2009, different races were organised under different names, such as Tour de France Féminin, Tour of the EEC Women, Tour Cycliste Féminin and Grande Boucle Féminine Internationale. These races faced challenges including financial difficulties, limited media coverage and trademark issues with the Tour de France organisers.

In response to criticism and demands from activists and professional cyclists, ASO created a one or two-day race called La Course by Le Tour de France in 2014. This race was held in conjunction with the Tour de France and was intended to highlight women’s cycling. However, it was criticised for not being a full Tour de France and for not having a challenging course. ASO defended its decision on the grounds that it was not possible to hold a men’s race and a women’s race at the same time for logistical reasons.

In June 2021, ASO announced the introduction of a new women’s stage race called Tour de France Femmes. The first edition took place in July 2022 and included eight stages. The race received overwhelming support from the professional women’s peloton as riders expressed a long-held desire to take part in a Tour de France for women. The race is scored like the Tour de France, with jerseys awarded for the overall, points classification, mountain classification and young rider classification. The race is sponsored by Zwift and supported by other main sponsors of the Tour de France.
