In a hard-fought game in the second German Handball League, Dessau-Roßlauer HV secured a deserved 28:23 away win against TuSEM Essen with a start-to-finish victory, leaving Essen in the basement of the table. The visitors dominated the game from the outset in front of a small crowd at the “Am Hallo” sports park, supported by a solid defensive performance and the outstanding Timo Löser, who was the top scorer with eight goals. Löser put in a strong attacking performance in the first 20 minutes in particular, which enabled the Beavers to secure a 14:10 lead at half-time.

The vociferous support of 70 fans who had travelled with them helped ensure that Dessau played with concentration throughout and successfully defended its lead in the second half. Despite a brief rebellion by Essen towards the end of the game, the DRHV remained stable and extended its lead through cleverly utilised surplus numbers and goals by Jakub Hrstka and Vincent Sohmann. The game ended 28:23, with Dessau taking an important two points for the table and leaving Essen disappointed. Essen, who have struggled since the winter break, were unable to get back into the game decisively even after a timeout and tactical adjustments and are now hoping for an improvement in the upcoming game against Bietigheim.

Rot-Weiss Essen celebrated an impressive 4:0 derby victory over Borussia Dortmund U23 on matchday 30 of the 3rd division, moving up to fifth place in the table. In front of 17,137 spectators at the Hafenstrasse stadium, Moussa Doumbouya scored two goals, including one with a header just before the break and another from a penalty in the second half, while Isaiah Young and substitute Sascha Voelcke added the other goals.

Coach Christoph Dabrowski used the same starting eleven as in the previous match against SC Verl, which was characterised by an unchanged formation. Despite Dortmund’s early possession, Essen largely dominated the game, made efficient use of their chances and were particularly active in attack through Marvin Obuz, who contributed three assists.

Borussia Dortmund’s U23s, coached by Jan Zimmermann and with Paris Brunner making his third division debut, were unable to find an answer to Essen’s strong performance over the 90 minutes and were clearly beaten. The defeat dropped Dortmund to eighth place in the table, while Essen maintained their position at the top and celebrated their highest win of the season in the third division.

SGS Essen defeated MSV Duisburg 4:1 (1:0) on matchday 15 of the Women’s Bundesliga. In a fiercely contested match, the Essen side were the more effective team and made the most of their chances.

Natasha Kowalski (24th/foul penalty), Beke Sterner (57th) and Ramona Maier (72nd) scored for SGS before Natalie Muth (76th) reduced the deficit for MSV. Annika Enderle scored the final goal in stoppage time (90.+2).

The team from Essen started with a lot of pressure and took control of the game in the early stages. The first good chance was missed by Fabienne Kober (10′), who failed to score in front of the Duisburg goal. The Essen team took the lead in the 24th minute. Lilli Purtscheller was fouled by Sarah Fürst in the penalty area and Kowalski converted the penalty safely. After taking the lead, Essen were a little too passive and Duisburg got into the game better. However, the Zebras did not create any compelling scoring chances.

The preliminary decision was made when Sterner made it 2:0 after a corner (57′). Maier increased the lead to 3:0 with a spectacular side-footed shot (72′). Duisburg reduced the deficit through Muth from a free-kick (76′), but the Essen team did not let anything else get in the way and Enderle made sure of the final score in stoppage time.

Football: We were at the Lower Rhine Cup match (quarter-final) between KFC Uerdingen (Oberliga Niederrhein) and Rot-Weiss Essen on 06 March 2024 at the Grotenburg Stadium in Krefeld (North Rhine-Westphalia / Germany / GER). The match ended 1:3 in front of 8,205 spectators.

Highlights of the football match KFC Uerdingen vs Rot-Weiss Essen and our football photos

In the quarter-finals of the Lower Rhine Cup, fifth division side KFC Uerdingen and third division side Rot-Weiss Essen (RWE) played out a thrilling duel in front of 8,205 spectators at the Grotenburg Stadium. Uerdingen took an early lead with a goal from Touratzidis after a dream pass from Talarski in the 14th minute. The hosts defended skilfully and remained dangerous on the counter-attack and had further good chances to extend their lead through Yanagisawa and Lipinski. RWE, with captain Vinko Sapina back in the starting eleven, found it difficult to get into the game and were initially unable to overcome the compact Uerdingen defence.

After the break, RWE turned up the heat, made a double substitution and changed tactics. Brumme equalised in the 56th minute with a shot from distance. Uerdingen had the chance to take the lead again through Weber, but RWE keeper Wienand made a brilliant save. In the closing stages, substitutes Harenbrock and Doumbouya proved their quality: Harenbrock headed in a cross from Voelcke to make it 2:1, and Doumbouya made the final score 3:1 in the 90th minute.
The game remained entertaining and open until the end, with chances on both sides. Despite the defeat, Uerdingen were celebrated by their fans for their strong performance, while RWE turned the game around with tactical adjustments and effective jokers. Uerdingen’s player coach Kenia was shown a yellow card in the final minutes, which meant that RWE ended the game with a superior number of players.

SGS Essen secured a place in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup against the Wolves from Wolfsburg (VfL Wolfsburg) with a 2:1 win against Bayer 04 Leverkusen, thanks to a convincing performance, especially in the first half in the large BayArena stadium. The Essen team, led by coach Markus Högner, followed the strategy of exerting pressure in the centre, which proved effective. Ramona Maier made it 1:0 early in the game with a spectacular overhead kick, and Laureta Elmazi extended the lead after a mistake by Bayer goalkeeper Charlotte Voll.

Bayer Leverkusen, coached by Robert de Pauw, found it difficult to hold their own against Essen’s aggressive and determined attacks. Although the team put in a stronger performance after the break thanks to tactical adjustments and personnel changes, it was not enough to turn the game around. Essen impressed with strong tackling, enthusiasm and effective offence, while Leverkusen struggled to control the game after falling behind. The hosts improved in the second half, but Essen’s defence stood firm to defend their lead and secure the win.

Despite Leverkusen’s efforts to get back into the game and Verena Wieder’s second-half equaliser, including an energetic final offensive, Essen held on for a 2-1 win and a place in the semi-finals.

Football: We were at the league match of the third division Rot-Weiss Essen against Spvgg Unterhaching on 01 March 2024 at the stadium on Hafenstraße in Essen (North Rhine-Westphalia / Germany / GER). The match took place as part of the 28th matchday of the 3rd division (2023/2024 season). The final score of the match was 1:3 in front of 16,287 spectators.
Highlights of the Rot-Weiss Essen v Spvgg Unterhaching football match and our football photos

Rot-Weiss Essen have suffered a series of setbacks in recent matches, which were particularly evident in the two most recent home games. Coach Christoph Dabrowski’s team were beaten 3-1 (1-2) by promoted side SpVgg Unterhaching. This followed a defeat against SSV Ulm 1846 Fußball a fortnight ago, leaving Rot-Weiss Essen without points in two consecutive home games for the first time this season. The defeat against Unterhaching was particularly painful, as it cost the club a place in the promotion zone.

The match against Unterhaching was particularly unfortunate for Rot-Weiss Essen. A harsh foul by Ron Berlinski in his own penalty area led to his red card and a subsequent penalty kick, which Patrick Hobsch converted in the 23rd minute. Despite the deficit and being outnumbered, Marvin Obuz managed to raise hopes with his goal in the 38th minute. However, Aaron Keller shortly before half-time and Maurice Krattenmacher in the second half scored for Unterhaching, bringing the final score to 1:3. There was only one change in terms of personnel compared to the last match against Dynamo Dresden: José-Enrique Rios Alonso returned from his yellow card suspension to replace Felix Götze, who was out through injury. Players such as Eric Voufack, Ekin Celebi and Sandro Plechaty were also missing through injury.

Despite the challenge of being a player down on the pitch, Rot-Weiss Essen put in an impressive performance at times, looking to control the game and attacking. Obuz’s goal emphasised his importance to the team with his seventh goal of the season and 17th goal contribution. However, Unterhaching’s efficiency led to the defeat of the match for RWE and three points for the Munich “suburbs”.

Handball: We were at the professional men’s handball match TuSEM Essen against GWD Minden on 1 March 2024 in the Sporthalle am Hallo, Essen. On matchday 23 of the 2nd German Handball League, TUSEM Essen suffered a disappointing 25:31 home defeat against GWD Minden and slipped to twelfth place in the table. Minden, led by a strong Malte Semisch in goal, who saved a total of 15 shots, and the assertive Mohamed Darmoul at the back, dominated both in defence and attack. Essen had problems exploiting the attacks effectively, even when Minden’s Luka Sebetic was shown the red card early on. The Essen offence could often only be stopped by fouls on Alexander Schoss, but the resulting superior numbers were not exploited.

TUSEM gave Minden too much space in defence, allowing the visitors to build a six-goal lead by half-time. The picture did not change in the second half either: Essen’s defence allowed large gaps and the team made simple mistakes in attack. Minden capitalised on this and was able to extend its lead through Mats Korte and Szymon Dzialakiewicz, who both scored seven goals apiece. Despite the attempt to reduce the deficit, there was no turnaround.

Despite an initially even game with chances on both sides, Dennis Chessa managed to give the Spatzen the lead in the 64th minute after an earlier goal of his was disallowed due to an offside decision. Felix Higl made the difference in the 82nd minute with a penalty after Essen had previously failed to find a way through the compact Ulm defence.

In a thrilling catch-up match between Borussia Dortmund II and Preußen Münster, Münster ended Dortmund’s impressive run without defeat after eight competitive matches. The visiting fans began with a pyrotechnic display across the back straight in the visitors’ block. At the same time, their team applied more pressure from the outset, which led to an early opening goal with a header from Scherder after a cross from captain Lorenz. Despite Dortmund equalising in the meantime through Otuali, Münster proved to be more effective in converting chances with further goals from Batmaz and Grodowski. Dortmund’s efforts to make up the deficit were ultimately unsuccessful, even though Aidonis was able to reduce the deficit once again with a header. Münster were solid in defence and secured a narrow but deserved away win.

Albrecht gave Hansa the lead in the second half, but Leipzig turned the game around with two more goals.

The highlight of the match was certainly the pyrotechnics show by the Ultras Chemie Leipzig: fans and Ultras of BSG Chemie Leipzig (Diablos) set off pyrotechnics (Bengalos, flares, smoke) under the motto 60 years of the 1964 GDR Oberliga championship. Wolfsburg continued to dominate after the break, but could only hit the outside of the net. Essen surprisingly took the lead through Ostermeier and Purtscheller. In the women’s race, European runners-up Franziska Brauße and Lin Teutenberg dominated the overall standings. Brauße was humorous and confident, while Teutenberg praised the atmosphere in Bremen. Lucy Nelson and Nora Tveit finished in second place, followed by Switzerland’s Mettraux and Schneider in third.
